Consumer Prices Increase By 0.8% In July

Consumer prices increased much faster than expected in the month of July, according to a report released by the Department of Labor on Thursday, with the price growth reflecting a continued increase in energy prices.

The report showed that the consumer price index rose 0.8 percent in July compared to an unrevised 1.1 percent increase in June. Economists had expected a more significant slowdown in the pace of price growth to 0.4 percent.

The Labor Department added that the core consumer price index, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.3 percent in July, matching the increase that was seen in the previous month. Core prices had been expected to increase by a more modest 0.2 percent.
